The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), governing body of the Irish sports of hurling and Gaelic football, announced an increase in profits for the ninth consecutive year, despite gate receipts at Croke Park falling for the third year in a row.
Group turnover rose to €50.8 million in 2009, up from €48.3 million in 2008. Profits from Croke Park, the third largest stadium in Europe, were €21.5 million for 2009 after interest and depreciation, but before distributions. This represents a 6.8 per cent increase year-on-year. “It’s been a very solid year. That’s not to say that there are no challenges ahead of us and we’ll need the same solid controls moving forward, but we’re in a good position,” said GAA president Christy Cooney. Cooney added the value of events at Croke Park to the wider economy has been calculated at “half a billion euro”. |
