Board moves to transform West Indies cricket

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has outlined its future marketing vision by proposing two new Twenty20 competitions and a beach cricket project.
In the ‘Transforming West Indies Cricket’ document released last week, the WICB said the new competitions are aimed in particular at children and a younger audience aged between ages 18 to 24. The regional Twenty20 tournament is slated for July 22 to 31 and will feature the current seven regional sides and an invitational side from the Americas, either the United States or Canada. The top two sides would qualify for the Champions League Twenty20. A second Twenty20 competition, the Calypso Cup, will be introduced along the lines of the Stanford Super Series played in 2008. Eight teams will contest the event - four from the Caribbean, three English counties, and an overseas team. The beach cricket competition will be piloted in one island during the last quarter of this year, and then rolled out across the Caribbean in 2011. Although essentially a grassroots initiative, it will involve star-quality former and current players, playing in mini-beach stadiums. "These are exciting times for West Indies Cricket," said Terry Blake, the former commercial director of the England & Wales Cricket Board, who was hired to lead the marketing revival of the WICB this January. "The men's team has a talented new coach, and this is a perfect time for commercial partners to support what I believe is an outstanding portfolio of regional events that will attract interest around the region." |
