UK general election delays TV sport decision

The UK government confirmed yesterday that a decision on changes to those sports that are protected for free-to-air television would be delayed until after the May 6 general election.
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) had been due to make a decision in June however parliament only has until Monday to rush through legislation that is unlikely to be reversed under a change of government. A review panel headed by former England Football Association executive director David Davies published a recommendation last autumn that live coverage of the Ashes cricket series and all home nations qualifying football matches should be added to the list. The news will be welcomed by several UK sports bodies, including the England and Wales Cricket Board, who argued its income and the survival of the game at grassroots level was largely down to the money provided by its contract with UK pay-broadcaster Sky. Davies’ panel also recommended that golf's Open Championship, Wimbledon and the Rugby World Cup should be added to the list of protected events. Horseracing’s Epsom Derby, rugby league's Challenge Cup final and the Winter Olympics were recommended for removal from the list |
