Juan Antonio Samaranch, the 89-year-old former International Olympic Committee president, is in hospital in Barcelona where he is said to be in “serious condition” from heart problems.
Samaranch, who stepped down as IOC president in 2001 after 21 years in the post, was admitted to the Quiron Hospital, Barcelona, on Sunday. He is currently on a respirator, undergoing an intensive programme of drug treatment. "He is currently under close observation and his prognosis is very serious," said a hospital official. Quiron Hospital doctor Esteban Mur added that while Samaranch is in grave condition, he has proved resilient after past bouts with illness. "He always has recovered very well and in this case, if it occurs, the recovery would be absolute,” the doctor is quoted by Spanish newspaper ABC. In October last year Samaranch was admitted to a hospital in Monaco after falling ill at the SPORTEL convention. |
