Over 160,000 World Cup tickets remain unsold

FIFA will today release for sale another 90,000 tickets for the World Cup, adding to the 75,000 category one tickets still available.
The Associated Press reports that Jerome Valcke, FIFA secretary general, made the numbers public at a ceremony marking the handover of Johannesburg's Ellis Park stadium to organisers. None of the 64 matches are yet sold out. The 90,000 tickets being released tomorrow were turned down by FIFA sponsors and affiliates. The category one tickets that are still unsold are some of the most expensive, for seats close to the side of pitches, and are beyond the means of most South Africans. Valcke said the organisers were still on target for selling 97 to 98 per cent of tickets before the tournament kicks off, equal to the last World Cup in Germany. Sales completed represent 96 per cent of the total allocation of 2.88 million tickets. |
