UK sport gets £50m government boost
Sport in the UK will receive an extra £50 million per year from 2012 out of revenues from the national lottery game.
UK newspaper The Guardian reports that the country's new Minister for Sports and Olympics, Hugh Robertson, also announced that a new Major Sports Events Bill would be passed to make it easier to win and host big sports events. Robertson said the bill would act to reassure sports bodies awarding hosting rights that bid campaign pledges would be fulfilled. The extra lottery funding for sport will be targeted at increasing participation in sport, and capitalising on the enthusiasm for sport predicted to be created by the London Olympics. Robertson said the plan is to “deliver a mass participation sports legacy from London 2012”. The Guardian reports that Robertson will make UK sports bodies create a central structure to ensure the mass participation legacy is delivered. |
