World Cup viewing boom even in non-participating markets
Analysis of TV viewing figures from the first round of this year’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa shows strong ratings across the globe and even in non-participating countries, according to Eurodata TV Worldwide.

In Asia - and despite the time difference - South Korean broadcaster SBS drew 7 million viewers for South Korea-Greece, the channel’s best TV audience since February 2007. In China, which didn’t qualify, state sport channel CCTV5 drew an average audience of 39.7 million viewers for Argentina-South Korea.

Local South African broadcaster SABC1 exceeded 8 million viewers for both the Bafana Bafana’s first two matches: 1 million more than the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final which saw South Africa take on Brazil.

“The combination of Winter Olympic Games held in North America and a FIFA World Cup held the same year in South Africa builds the perfect platform for TV audience records all around the planet,” said Florent Simon, Sports Manager at Eurodata TV Worldwide.

In the US market, the Vancouver Games on NBC scored more than 20 million viewers on 15 occasions, a feat NBC could only achieve 12 times during the whole year of 2009.

Comprehensive analysis and TV ratings for the 2010 Olympic Games, FIFA World Cup and all other major worldwide events are available in Eurodata TV Worldwide's 2010 edition of the "Yearly Sport Key Facts" report.
