Ecclestone threatens ‘low-paying’ Monaco GP with exclusion |

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone has warned Monaco and other European GPs that they will need to increase the amount they pay to guarantee a place in an already crammed annual calendar of 19 races.
Ecclestone is understood to have agreed a 20-race-per-year cap with team bosses. An Indian GP is confirmed for next season and a race in Texas, US, is set for 2012, the same year when the F1 boss expects to see Russia joining the calendar too. South Africa is another country Ecclestone says it would have good chances of getting a GP. The average race fee is believed to be $31.2 million, but European races pay the lowest fees, with Monaco understood to be the only GP not to spend a single cent. “We can do without Monaco. They don’t pay enough,” Ecclestone said. “The Europeans are going to have to pay more money or we will have to go somewhere else.” He also told broadcasters they will be asked to dig deep into their pockets too as trackside advertising gradually comes back to pre-crisis level in all sports and F1 corporate hospitality sales recover from a 30-per-cent drop last year with a 10-per-cent rise in 2010. |
